Nutritional Therapy for Diabetes
Types of Diabetes
There are two types of diabetes, both of which cause blood glucose to become too high (1,2).
Whereas type 1 is an autoimmune disease that causes the immune system to attack the pancreatic cells which produce insulin, type 2 is linked to obesity, diet and lifestyle and accounts for around 90% of total diabetes cases (3). Both types may have serious implications for long term health including heart disease and stroke, nerve damage and kidney and vision problems (4).
The good news is that these health problems do not have to be your fate if you’ve been diagnosed with diabetes. Recently published research (5) is helping to change the view of the mainstream medical establishment by demonstrating that weight loss and dietary changes can put type 2 diabetes into remission and decrease the risk of associated health problems.
How can a Nutritional Therapist help?
The Nutritional Therapists at Irrefutable Health will work with you to fully understand your unique circumstances and goals and devise a personalised plan with dietary and lifestyle changes that you can incorporate into your life. Our practitioners have helped many people with diabetes lose weight, balance blood sugar and in some case, reduce medication.
As Nutritional Therapy is complementary to conventional healthcare, with your permission, your Nutritional Therapist will liaise with your GP and any other health professionals involved in your care.
Your personalised recommendations will be reviewed at each appointment to evaluate how they have been incorporated into your life and how effective they have been and your plan will be amended and updated accordingly.
A course of 4 appointments 4 to 6 weeks apart is recommended for optimal outcomes and to allow sufficient time for changes to manifest.
Please note only your GP or consultant can advise you to reduce or stop any medications you may be taking.
