How is Functional Medicine Different?
The functional medicine approach involves understanding the origins, treatment and prevention of complex and chronic disease. Hallmarks of functional medicine include:
- Client-centred care. The focus is on promoting health as a positive vitality beyond simply the absence of disease.
- An integrative, science-oriented basis. Functional medicine practitioners consider the complex web of interactions in the client’s history, lifestyle and physiology that may that lead to illness. Each client’s unique genetic makeup is examined, along with both internal (body, mind and spirit) and external (social and physical environment) factors that affect your function.
- The use of best medical practices. Integration of traditional Western medical practices with alternative solutions creates a focus on prevention through diet, nutrition and exercise, the use of the latest laboratory testing and other diagnostic techniques and prescribed combinations of drugs and/or botanical medicines, supplements, detoxification programs, or stress-management techniques.
- Bluesky classes and courses are recommended when appropriate.
